Hawthorne Limousin: About Us

As a part-time farmer for the past 40 years, in 1987 I made the decision to purchase a pure breed limousin cow or heifer.  I choose the limousin breed because the breed has good conformation and muscle, is known for its easy calving as well as excellent finished animal and these are essential qualities required to meet what the market needs.

After visiting limousin sales in 1987, 1988, & 1989 to view what was on offer I finally purchased a cow and her heifer calf in 1990. Ronick Cosmetic won 1st prize at the sale and went on to produce many prize winners.

Our first calf as breeders proved a real success story. Ulysse sired Hawthorne Hannah won prize after prize. In 1992 she won 1st prize at Mullingar, Oldcastle and Trim Shows and 2nd prize at North Eastern Limousin Club Championship. In 1993 she won 1st prize at RDS Spring Show, 1st prize and Supreme Champion at Mullingar Show, 1st prize and Limousin Champion at Longford Show, 1st prize and Limousin Champion at Tullamore Show. Hawthorne Hannah also won prizes in '93, '94, '95, '96, and '97.

Ronick Cosmetic's second calf Hawthorne Ivan also won 1st prize at RDS Spring Show and 1st prize at many other shows and was sold to a dairy and suckler farmer, who breeds limousin cattle.

The Hawthorne Herd has increased over the past 29 years. This has been achieved by retaining most of the heifer calves born and with the purchase of five additional heifers. Throughout the past twenty-nine years we have achieve good results by using only French AI straws purchased from the Limousin Society. Recently we have used some of our own home bred bulls with excellent results.
